Because I'm the same age as The Beatles, I was actually able to be young twice. I was just old enough to remember the birth of rock and roll. In fact, I used to go to Record Rendezvous in Cleveland where Alan Freed and the record store's owner Irv Mintz came up with the tag'rock'n roll" for a concert Freed was promoting at the Cleveland Arena in 1953. By virtue of its birthplace status, Cleveland became the host city for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino and Elvis, among a few others, turned music into the voice of youth culture by reflecting rebellion born out of conformity and the rhythms of industrialization, the hardest rock coming from the country's steel-making midsection. Musically, the early sixties were still the fifties, only flatter. Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vinton and Jimmy Clanton were riding the charts once dominated by rock's founding fathers and much of the rebellion was gone. The Beach Boys were having "Fun, Fun, Fun" and Phil Spector had built a wall of sound, but nothing was new anymore. Music wasn't engaging me the way it used to. Then it happened. Word started filtering across the Atlantic that England's youth were obsessed with a band of musicians from Liverpool with shaggy haircuts, cleverly named The Beatles, who performed great covers of American rock and roll standards along with their own songs. Then Capitol Records, who had turned The Beatles' down twice, released their second British hit "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and Beatlemania was born. People everywhere still remember where they were when they heard their first Beatles' song. I was at a coffee shop on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Indiana. By February 1964, the single was #1. By April, all Top Five singles were Beatles songs. By May, their singles had been at #1 for fourteen straight weeks. The rest is history. The Beatles landed on American shores to the most tumultuous, hysteric reception ever accorded artists of any kind, and appeared on Ed Sullivan's really big show, with the entire country watching 73 million people. In their wake came the "British Invasion." Rock and roll was alive again, and I was young again, only this time, it would never be the same, and neither would I.

The Beatles instantly became the defining artists of their generation, like Elvis before them and Frank before him. But something was different. After five years at the Top Of The Pops, they blew away the old definition of what's possible under the term rock and roll, making a musical statement that hit their audience with all the rebelliousness of Elvis and the creative sophistication of Duke Ellington. Like hearing them for the first time, people everywhere remember where they were when they first heard Sgt Pepper. For me, it was two o'clock in the morning when a DJ in Cleveland got an advance copy, and I lay in bed listening, and thinking, my God, nothing will ever be the same. I realized immediately what a major musical milestone it was, driven by a liberating attitude and aesthetic that put the fifties in their place, elevated pop music and youth culture, and influenced artists, writers, designers, dancers, architects and filmmakers all over the world. And, most assuring, rock was growing with me...It was still the cultural voice that spoke my feelings. No longer a cultural diversion, it was creating culture, expanding the social fabric, evolving, inspiring and expressing change here, there and everywhere.
Because of The Beatles and their powerful effect on everything around me, I determined to make music a big part of my life. I headed West, where I wound up at Capitol Records, home of The Beatles, or at least, what was left of them. There were rumors Paul was dead. One day, Capitol's art director, Roland Young, got a frantic call from the billboard company that had installed an Abbey Road billboard on Sunset Strip the day before, depicting John, Paul, George and Ringo crossing the street, their heads die-cut at the top of the board. That night, someone had climbed the board and removed Paul's head. A duplicate was being prepared and would be in place by the end of the day. But Roland told the billboard company to hold off. He went down to the location to check it out, then told them to leave the board alone. And the rumor grew.
We all have our Beatles memories, forever accessible by simply playing their recordings. Generations who've followed have also been deeply affected by the band's CDs, movies, books and stage shows, although without the intensity of hearing them change the sonic portrait of modern music. No matter. The Beatles are timeless and timely, their musical path a lot like their last hit, a long and winding road that never ends.
ACME Studio celebrates the extraordinary artistry of the band that rocked the world with a series of limited edition pen collections and cases that recall their exceptional music and iconic graphics. Designed by Adrian Olabuenaga, who first saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan and was forever affected by their music, and Rod Dyer, who was a young art director at Capitol Records when Let It Be became The Beatles' swan song, the collection reflects the exuberance and appeal of the four Liverpool musicians who redefined the possibilities of artistic expression.
